The Paradox of the Ministry (2 Cor. 4:7-18)

But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. 13 Since, then, we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed, therefore I spoke,” we too believe and therefore speak, 14 knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and place us with you in his presence. 15 Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God. 16

The Integrity of the Ministry of the New Covenant (2 Cor. 4:1-6)

Therefore, since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged. 2 Rather, we have renounced shameful, hidden things; not acting deceitfully or falsifying the word of God, but by the open declaration of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even though our gospel is veiled, it is veiled for those who are perishing, 4 in whose case the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that they may not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for the sake of Jesus. 6 For God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of [Jesus] Christ. In the preceding chapters of Second Corinthians, Paul contrasted the ministries of the New Covenant instituted by Christ and the Old Covenant instituted by Moses. 

The Cost and Reward of Discipleship (Mk. 8:34-38)

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 35 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. 36 What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? 37 What could one give in exchange for his life? 38 Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.” Jesus delivers a profound teaching on the cost and reward of discipleship.  He addresses the crowd and his disciples with a universal message that anyone wishing to follow him must have a profound inward transformation—metanoia, a transformative change of heart and mind.  To be a true disciple he must reorient his life, renounce his plans, ambition, and identity, and embrace the identity and mission given by Christ ac

The Blind Man of Bethsaida (Mk. 8:22-26)

When they arrived at Bethsaida, they brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on him and asked, “Do you see anything?” 24 Looking up he replied, “I see people looking like trees and walking.” 25 Then he laid hands on his eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly. 26 Then he sent him home and said, “Do not even go into the village.” Jesus and his disciples arrived in Bethsaida, a predominantly Jewish town on the northeastern shore of the Sea of Galilee where Jesus had previously performed miracles (Mark 6:45, 53).  Bethsaida, the hometown of several of Jesus' apostles, including Peter, Andrew, and Philip, was in the general direction Jesus went after the Pharisees demanded a sign from him (Mark 8:11-13).  A blind man was brought to Jesus by some people, demonstrating the community's awareness

And do you not remember, 19 when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?” They answered him, “Twelve.” 20 “

The Feeding of the Four Thousand (Mk. 8:1-10)

Healing the Woman With Hemorrhages (Lk. 8:43-48)

A woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years, who [had spent her whole livelihood on doctors and] was unable to be cured by anyone, 44 came up behind him and touched the tassel on his cloak. Immediately her bleeding stopped.  45 Jesus then asked, “Who touched me?” While all were denying it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds are pushing and pressing in upon you.”  46 But Jesus said, “Someone has touched me; for I know that power has gone out from me.”  47 When the woman realized that she had not escaped notice, she came forward trembling. Falling down before him, she explained in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she had been healed immediately.  48 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace.” A woman suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years had exhausted her entire livelihood on medical treatments that did not cure her.  Under Jewish law, she would have been in a state of constant ritual impurity (Lv. 15:25-27).  In desperation

Jesus Calms a Storm at Sea (Lk. 8:22-25)

One day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, “Let us cross to the other side of the lake.” So they set sail, 23 and while they were sailing he fell asleep. No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 Take care, then, how you hear. Women in Jesus' Ministry (Lk. 8:1-3)

Afterward he journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. Accompanying him were the Twelve 2 and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, Susanna, and many others who provided for them out of their resources. Women played significant roles in Jesus’ ministry as indicated by their presence in his close circle of disciples and their support of Jesus' mission.  The Twelve and some women, healed of physical or spiritual maladies, followed Jesus through the Galilean towns and villages where he preached the good news of the Kingdom of God.  This continued the prophetic tradition found in the Old Testament writings, where prophets foretold the coming of God's kingdom (see Is. 52:7; Is. 61:1; Jer. 23:5-6).
