The Justice and Harmony of the Messianic Age (Isaiah 11:1-9)

But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. 2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, A spirit of counsel and of strength, a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the Lord, 3 and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord. Not by appearance shall he judge, nor by hearsay shall he decide, 4 But he shall judge the poor with justice, and decide fairly for the land’s afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. 5 Justice shall be the band around his waist, and faithfulness a belt upon his hips. 6 Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat; The calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze, together their young shall lie down; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. 8 The baby shall play by the viper’s den, an...

The Mountain of the Lord: A Promise of Hope (Isaiah 2:1-5)

This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.  2 In days to come, The mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest mountain and raised above the hills. All nations shall stream toward it. 3 Many peoples shall come and say: “Come, let us go up to the Lord’s mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, That he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths.” For from Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4 He shall judge between the nations, and set terms for many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; One nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. 5 House of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! Isaiah 2:1–5 presents a profound vision of hope and peace, foretelling the universal reign of God. The prophet envisions a time when all nations will gather at the mountain of the Lord to receive ...

The Coming of the Son of Man and the Call to Vigilance (Lk. 21:25-38)

There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26 People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.”   29 He taught them a lesson. “Consider the fig tree and all the other trees. 30 When their buds burst open, you see for yourselves and know that summer is now near; 31 in the same way, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.   34 “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness...

The Messiah’s Divine Kingship is Revealed (Luke 20:41-47)

Then he said to them, “How do they claim that the Messiah is the Son of David? 42 For David himself in the Book of Psalms says: ‘The Lord said to my lord, “Sit at my right hand 43 till I make your enemies your footstool.”’ 44 Now if David calls him ‘lord,’ how can he be his son?”  45 Then, within the hearing of all the people, he said to [his] disciples, 46 “Be on guard against the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and love greetings in marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. 47 They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” Jesus addresses the Pharisees and scribes who have been questioning him.  The title " Son of David " was commonly used to refer to the Messiah, as it was believed that the Messiah would come from David's lineage (cf. 2 Sam. 7:12-16; Is. 11:1).  Jesus acknowledges the traditional belief about the Messiah but uses Psalm 110:1 to ch...
